BERNARDO

BERNARDO

At the encouragement of Vogue’s Diana Vreeland, the Bernardo footwear brand was founded by architect and artist Bernard Rudofsky in 1946. Inspired by ancient architecture and the social theories presented at his 1944 exhibition “Are Clothes Modern?” at the Museum of Modern Art, the Bernardo sandal was designed to free the foot from confining footwear of the 1940s. The original collection of sandals debuted at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Manhattan with 6 designs. Rudofsky is credited with the invention of the women’s modern-day sandals.
